What Is R-Value?
R-value is a measure of thermal resistance — how well a material resists the flow of heat. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation performs.
R-value is additive: if you have R-11 in your attic and add R-19, you end up with R-30. This is why upgrading existing insulation is often more cost-effective than removing and replacing it.
R-value is also depth-dependent: more insulation = higher R-value. For blown-in fiberglass, approximately 3.5 inches of material equals R-13. To reach R-38, you need approximately 12–14 inches of high-density blown fiberglass.
What Does Florida Building Code Require?
Florida Building Code (FBC) requires R-30 minimum for attic insulation in Climate Zone 1, which covers all of South Florida including Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Broward County, and Miami-Dade County.
This is the minimum — the floor, not the target. Many homes in Boca Raton were built to lower standards (R-11, R-13, R-19) and have never been upgraded. Even homes built to current code minimum (R-30) are leaving energy savings on the table.
