"R-value" is the single most important number on any insulation quote, yet most homeowners are never told what it actually measures. This guide explains R-value in plain language, why R-38 is the target for Florida attics, and how depth on the truck translates to performance in your ceiling.

What R-value measures

R-value rates a material's resistance to heat flow: the higher the number, the more heat it blocks. Importantly, R-value is additive by thickness. Two inches of a material rated R-3 per inch gives you R-6; stacking more of the same material keeps adding to the total. That is why blown-in insulation is specified as a target R-value, not just a number of bags — the finished depth is what determines performance.

Why Florida targets R-38

The U.S. Department of Energy sets insulation recommendations by climate zone, and Florida sits in the warm southern zone where R-38 is the attic standard. You might assume a hot climate needs less insulation, but the opposite is true: in Florida, the attic becomes a 130°F+ oven under the sun, and without strong resistance to heat flow that heat radiates straight into your living space. R-38 is the depth that keeps conditioned air inside and solar heat out.

From depth to R-value

Blown-in fiberglass is rated roughly R-2.2 to R-2.7 per inch, so reaching R-38 means installing about 14 to 17 inches of settled depth. The key word is settled — freshly blown insulation fluffs higher and then compresses to its rated thickness.
